Is Walmart Canada's Cheapest 2.1 Computer Speaker System Any Good?

$29.98 Canadian, or $22.59 USD at the time of writing. That’s how much the Blackweb 2.1 Multimedia Speaker System cost me at Walmart. Now, I normally take my time deciding what I want, but for $29.98, I figured I might as well give it a shot.

I should probably clean up and stuff.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the box is very small for a 2.1 speaker system, and surprisingly light. Part of me was wondering if that really was it, but whatever. The box isn’t important.

Now we get to the stuff that matters. 2 compact speakers, and a modestly sized “.1" to compensate for the highs from the tiny speakers.

Get it all out of there and hook it up, and it’s all really simple. A 3.5mm to RCA cable that handles audio input, a standard household plug to provide constant power, pretty much standard speaker wire and spring-loaded terminals to connect the two small speakers, a knob on the back for bass, a knob on the front for volume, and a switch on the back to turn everything on.

It looks like this from the front, but how does it all sound? Well, I don’t normally like cheap computer speakers, as they tend to be 2 channel systems that sound tinny and simply can’t produce enough bass. This one is super cheap and uses a “subwoofer” to fill in the lows and make everything a little more even, so it sounds really good. Keep in mind that even with the bass boost cranked, it does not bump hard. But as a balanced super-compact system that sounds solid and smooth cranking out everything from Alice In Chains to The Weeknd, it’s really good for the money. There will be distortion at high volumes and the speaker wiring is rather short, but that’s to be expected. If you want a decent set of speakers for the garage, or maybe want an affordable speaker system that takes up minimal space in your dorm, I’d recommend buying these.

Interestingly enough, the system listed on Walmart’s American website is vastly different than the system we get in Canada. Although the American system is $44.46 as opposed to this one at $22.59 USD, it’s almost 8 times more powerful and has a remote volume control. Interesting.

why didn’t you just run the audio to the proper stereo setup in the background?

That setup is going in the garage because it’s old, cheap, takes up a ton of room, and has weird persisting crackle that new speaker wires didn’t help. Plus, then I’ll have better mounting options for my TV.

Or just buy used. I picked up a THX-certified Logitech setup a couple of years ago for $10 that kicks ass. You can still find used versions of the same set on Amazon still selling for upwards of $150. I’ve also found Boston Acoustics and Cambridge SoundWorks sets for next to nothing that still sound amazing years later.

In case you’re worried about condition, Goodwill usually has a 7-day return privilege on electronics so you can get your money back if there’s a problem, but so far every set I’ve bought has worked perfectly. Like with cars, I generally prefer to have used but higher quality than new but cheap.

We don’t really have Goodwill here, so none of the thrift stores will take back electronics. Plus, since all of my music is in my car or on my laptop, I can’t really test them before buying.

I use a Logitech Z4 system that I bought years ago for $50 or so. Like that one it’s 2.1 and it works perfectly fine in keeping me awake all day while at work. Sometimes good enough is good enough.
